Unifying Science & Spirit – The Eternal Wisdom of Thoth/Hermes; the 1st Hermetic Principle.

Following my previous blog “Hermes Trismegistus (Thrice Great) and the Lost Wisdom of Humanity”, this new series of blogs will explore how leading edge science is now confirming the ‘wisdom of the ancients’.

As set out in that last blog, Thoth is the Ancient Egyptian God who the Greeks later equated with their own God Hermes and they then became synonymous to history.

Humanity, our species Homo sapiens, has existed for tens of thousands of years in our modern form. Great knowledge and wisdom was accordingly held and conveyed for thousands of years before writing first appeared. Therefore, although the  wisdom of of Thoth/Hermes was only written down in a format that could be widely distributed less then 2,000 years ago, I believe this wisdom existed for thousand of years before that, and thus can be called the “eternal wisdom of humanity”.

It’s generally agreed by linguistic scholars that written language first developed in n Mesopotamia, specifically in ancient Sumer, around 3200 BCE.  That is over 5,000 years ago. The Egyptian Dynastic period began around the same time, about 3,100 BCE.

Clearly this period in human history witnessed a major socio-cultural evolutionary leap in the region known as the ‘Cradle of Western Civilization” driven by the appearance of of writing which initially was in the form of Pictographs in Sumer and Hieroglyphics in Egypt. The written wisdom of of Thoth/Hermes would have likely first appeared during the same period which was again over 5,000 years ago. It is both an eternal wisdom and universal as well.

At the end of the previous blog I said I would assess each of the 7 Hermetic Principles set out in The Kybalion in terms of recent scientific evidence that I suggest confirms them. I will dedicate a blog to each of the 7 Principles. And, regardless of whether this wisdom, set out as the Hermetic Principles, is sourced back to a particular individual who lived in the ancient world or not, the wisdom stands on its own as the “Perennial Philosophy” closely aligned with the Gnostic Christian tradition and perhaps as its forerunner.

This blog will consider the growing scientific confirmation of the 1st Hermetic Principle: “The Principle of Mentalism”. “All is Mind. The Universe is Mental.”

In regard to this First Principle, I reference the advanced theoretical work of Dr. Amit Goswami, Theoretical Quantum Physicist, and, Philosopher of Science Dr. Ervin Laszlo. Both scientific theorists focus on Quantum Physics which first appeared over 100 years ago with Planck’s law and ushered in a scientific revolution, essentially an “non-materialist revolution. Although most scientists today still identify themselves as as “Materialists” despite that revolution. It is a complex revolution that has yet to fully shift the Materialist scientific paradigm.

The essence of the Quantum Physics revolution is about the core and true nature of our reality. At the core our reality is solely energy and light quanta particles and everything in our Cosmos is made up of those basic elements which are of course immaterial. Revolutionary indeed to the classic scientific view developed by Newton and others in the 17th Century! However both the laws of quantum and macro realities apply in their respective realms.

Somehow when these immaterial elements are combined in certain ways by the forces of physics they become material such as myself or the desk I’m working at. However if an Electron Microscope viewed me and my desk down to the level of particles all that could be seen would be little bits of energy and light and vast amounts of empty space between them. (That is also a reflection of the Cosmos around us so “As Above, So Below” but that’s next week’s Second Hermetic Principle!)

At the leading age of acceptance of what Quantum Physics is actually telling us is Dr. Amit Goswami. Dr. Goswami is Professor Emeritus of Physics at the University of Oregon, where he has taught for over 30 years and is the author of numerous books in this field  including: “God is Not Dead”, “The Self-Aware Universe; Physics of the Soul”, “The Quantum Book of Living, Dying, Reincarnation and Immortality”, and, “How Quantum Activism Can Save Civilization”. His main thesis is that “Consciousness, not matter, is the ground of all being.” In other words “All is Mind.”

In “God is Not Dead”, Dr. Goswami suggests that not only are science and religion compatible, but that Quantum Physics proves the existence of God. In this later books, Goswami moves beyond theory into the realm of action. He asserts that “quantum thinking” is striking the death blow to Scientific Materialism; that “quantum thinking” allows us to break from past bad habits and bring us into free will and possibilities. Beginning with the question; “God is here, so what are you going to do about it?”, Goswami calls for a plan of action that involves applying “quantum thinking” to solving a variety of societal issues.

Another leading edge thinker in this realm is Dr. Ervin Laszlo. Dr. Laszlo is a pioneer of Systems Theory and General Evolution Theory, and has written a number of books on Quantum Field Theory including; “Science and the Akashic Field: An Integral Theory of Everything, and, “”The Akashic Field, Quantum Field Theory”.

From Dr. Laszlo’s Wikipedia page:  “In his 2004 book, “Science and the Akashic Field: An Integral Theory of Everything”, Laszlo posits a “Field of Information” as the substance of the Cosmos. Using the Sanskrit and Vedic  term for “space”, Akasha, he calls this Information Field the “Akashic Field”. He suggests that the “Quantum Vacuum” is the fundamental energy and information-carrying field that informs our Universe. Laszlo describes how such an informational field can explain why our Universe is fine-tuned as to form Galaxies and Conscious Lifeforms; and why evolution is an informed, not  a random process.”

Energy, light, consciousness and information are indeed the fundamental elements of our Cosmos from matter latter emerges. Accordingly, our Cosmos is clearly fundamentally immaterial as Quantum Physics has proven and Quantum Field Theory expands.

The eternal wisdom of Thoth/Hermes is exactly that. “All is Mind. The Universe is Mental.” The Material World exists of course but emergent from the primary Immaterial World. A dual nature but also an illusory one if the belief is that our Cosmos is primarily Material as the majority of scientists still maintain today.

The implications of this Principle now confirmed by new science are enormous. If one truly understands Quantum Physics one has to believe that the nature of our reality is much more mysterious then previously understand. That leads to many unexplained phenomenon to now be understood and explained, such as psychic phenomenon, the existence of consciousness after physical death, etc. All understandable, explainable and very real.

In my next blog I will present the newer scientific evidence which confirms the 2nd Hermetic Principle – “THE PRINCIPLE OF CORRESPONDENCE; As above, so below; As below so above.”
